Musical Director

Shaun Marsden

shaun MarsdenShaun was born in Penzance; Cornwall and lived in Helston before moving to Redruth where he spent his childhood, the first sign of Shaun’s musical talent was at the age of five where he began to play the piano with no tuition, from this Shaun began his musical journey at the age of five with the Illogan Sparnon Silver Band with Mr Clifford Bolitho. Over the next five years he quickly progressed as a cornet player making his way up to Soprano Cornet. In this time he began studying his music grades in theory and practical under the tutelage of Mr Luker and Mr Albert Chappell. Once Shaun was an established player he was approached by many bands to assist on a number of instruments including Trombone, Horn, Cornet and percussion. These bands included; Camborne Town Band, Lanner Band, St.Keverne Band and many other local bands.

Shaun moved to Torquay at the age of twenty where he joined the Brixham Town Band. He competed at competitions on a regular basis and conducted when required. He also started to help and eventually joined Torbay brass using his experience to complete the percussion section. After six years in Torquay he moved back to Cornwall, by now he had gained a lot of experience and knowledge both playing and conducting.

The Illogan Sparnon Silver Band welcomed Shaun back as he took the role of assistant Musical Director. This involved taking the junior band and training youngsters. He was given the opportunity to take the senior band to the Cornish Championships, which with a lot of hard work gained the band second prize. As a conductor this was his best achievement so far showing what he has become. Unfortunately this position came to an end and Shaun formed an ensemble in 2010. While conducting his ensemble he enrolled at The Open University studying a Diploma in Music Theory and Composition. He has since written many arrangements for his ensemble; arranging anything from pop music to scoring original testpieces for his ensemble.

While conducting he was approached by St.Keverne band to play Flugel Horn, during his short time at St.Keverne he entered many contests with them; being crowned Cornish Champions 2011 was most noteworthy.

Shaun recently held the musical director position at The Constantine Silver band where he helped train the band. Also approached by the Heyl Town Band to prepare the band for the West of England Bandsmen Festival at Bugle 2013, here with only 10 rehearsals he gained the band 1st prize in the Third section. As a musical director Shaun has successfully gained top prizes in his contesting career so far, now he has officially been appointed musical director of the Heyl Town Band and looks forward to the future with them.

Shaun is always aiming for perfection and he has now decided to go for more qualifications within his conducting career, over the next few years he hopes to achieve the Licentiate Brass Band Conducting Diploma (LBBC) through the National Association of Brass Band Conductors.

Heyl Town Band look forward to many years ahead under shaun’s Musical Direction.
